Migration is based on SQLWays, a database migration product capable of migrating data, database schema and server-side business logic between major databases.

Engagement Process

The main project steps are as follows:

Assessment

At this stage, we analyze the scope of migration and specific requirements

• Scope
  • How many databases (instances, schemas) do you need to convert
  • The total number of tables, index and the database size (GB)
  • The total number of views, procedures, functions, triggers and other database objects
• Specific Requirements
  • What is acceptable downtime for production migration?
  • Do you need to synchronize changes in source and target databases after migration during some period of time?
• Out of Scope
  • Application conversion is out of scope of database migration services
  • In many cases, you need to modify SQL statements, database access API, drivers in your applications to work with new database.
  • We offer services to migrate applications as well

As a result of the Assessment stage, we need to have the following information:

• Database objects to be converted
• Database size information
• List of specific requirements
• Understanding what is out of scope

Design - 2-4 weeks (Remotely)

At this stage, we analyze database creation scripts, develop migration plan and scripts, and customize SQLWays to fully meet migration requirements

• Providing Database Details
  • We receive database creation scripts or dumps
  • Sample data can be provided but this is not required. We receive data distribution information
• Internal Migration Testing and Customizing
  • We re-create database structure on our servers
  • We run test conversions and customize SQLWays to achieve ~100% automation and to meet migration requirements

Results of the Design stage are as follows:

• Migration plan, scripts and guidelines
• Customized version of SQLWays

Proof-of-Concept (Test Migration) - 2-5 days (On-site) or remotely by providing instructions

At this stage, we run full migration in a test mode using customized version of SQLWays and migration scripts.

• Running test migration for test databases having the same structure as the production database and comparable data volume
• Adapting migration process
• Performing database structure conversion validation
• Performing data validation (row numbers for all tables, full data validation for sample set of tables etc)

Results of the Testing stage are as follows:

• Approved migration plan, scripts and guidelines as well as SQLWays version for production migration

Production Migration - 1-3 days (On-site) or remotely by providing support

At this stage, we run production migration in a test mode using customized version of SQLWays and migration scripts.

• Running production migration
• Performing database structure conversion validation
• Performing data validation

Payment Model

Typically, we negotiate about the total project cost, and after that you can pay 30% after acceptance of the Design stage, 40% after Test Migration and 30% after Production migration. Of course, we can negotiate about different options.
