Customer

Our client was Global Investment Bank (GIB), a provider of investment banking advisory services. Besides financing, risk management, and corporate finance advisory services, it provides foreign exchange, securities lending, and loan syndication services worldwide.

Technologies

Sybase ASE, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server

Challenge

GIB had initially been using Sybase ASE as a major platform for its applications, most of which were developed in-house and highly customized. Not happy with Sybase’s licensing strategy, GIB was considering a move from Sybase to other alternative platforms in order to eliminate Sybase instances completely. During the evaluation phase, GIB received numerous technical consultations from Microsoft and Oracle. GIB was looking to perform conversion of about 200 applications, schema, and data from Sybase to Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle. DDL, business logic, scripts, data were to be migrated from Sybase ASE to Oracle. The project also involved application migration from Sybase CTLIB to ODBC, Sybase ASE to Microsoft SQL Server, and Perl CT-Lib to Perl DBI. A vast number of applications were to be converted within a short time frame.

Solution

Global System Integrator (GSI) was chosen as the SI/Services provider for the project. In terms of tooling, the SQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA) was initially considered; however, following a detailed testing and analysis of major migration vendors, Ispirer’s migration tool was approved as the preferred tool for migration. Ispirer provided the company with unlimited license for SQLWays along with support for two years (one year to begin with and second year license extension).

Technical migration consultants and SQLWays tool developers were assigned to the project. Specific Ispirer SQLWays customizations were performed to support various C/C++ database APIs. Technical specialists provided about fifteen customizations per week in the bounds of support, as well as new modified versions of SQLWays. Ispirer’s technical consultants also conducted a business trip with the GSI team in India, as the migration required onsite consulting and support.

Results and Advantages

The project was complex and the delivery schedule tough, which entailed multilevel support by the Ispirer team.

Ispirer’s automated, customized, and optimized database migration solution enabled the GSI and GIB teams to accomplish the task successfully within the stipulated short timeline.

Because of the specific SQLWays customizations to support various C/C++ database APIs, all requirements of the customer pertaining to the target code were implemented by Ispirer’s specialists.
